Gasoline Prices

I never thought that I would see gasoline prices over $2 per gallon in my part of the country. Granted, this is the price of the premium grade, but I'm still astonished. I wish that my city had a better public transportation system (one that I could actually use to get from home to work and back again) because I would be using it on a regular basis.

I wish that we would begin drilling for oil in Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) so that we would be less dependent on foreign oil. Opening just one half of one percent of this land for oil exploration and drilling could produce billions of barrels of oil. ANWR is an arctic desert that gets a few hundred visitors a year. Animals that make this area their home would not be affected by the drilling activity on such a small portion of land. Visit Anwr.or for more information.

As a short term fix to these high gas prices, the government could roll back or eliminate the taxes. That would reduce the price of gasoline by about 30 cents per gallon. But the government hates to give up any money....

Iraqi torture...

...And unfortunately I don't mean torture by Iraqis. It seems as if some American soldiers participated in some horrible treatment of Iraqi prisoners. The Army has investigated and several soldiers face court martial -- which is as it should be.

The military is made up of all types of people -- it is not a wholly good entity. However, if we are to hold our military up to the rest of the world as an example (if we are to hold our country up as an example) then those who participated in these acts must be punished.
